I am working with dozens of people every week who are trying to get their heads around the financial and geopolitical forces surrounding AI. OpenAI is used by more than 300 million people every week and is raising a fresh round of financing, led by SoftBank, that would value it at $300 billion (€285 billion)–15 times its value in 2022.

The top seven US tech companies–Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia, Tesla and Apple–are together spending $560 billion on Al infrastructure between 2024 and the end of this year.

In the Sunday Times Business section, Danny Fortson writes about the disruption of560 this is causing. “Geopolitically, AI has taken centre stage, as the great powers of China, America and Europe jostle for supremacy. All the American AI leaders, including OpenAI, have recently begun working with the defence establishment.”

Sam Altman, Head of Open AI told The Tech Times Podcast, “I think it’d be very bad if the US government does not understand AI and the impact it’s going to have. Are we heading towards more authoritarian AI or more democratic AI? Obviously I’m very much on the democratic AI side, but that comes with some trade-offs and that will come with some bad things in society too. We have never empowered individuals this much as we’re about to.”
