Any country that tries to wean itself from dirty energy has to create industrial policies that invest in the creation of clean-energy manufacturing jobs, including in former coal communities. Ireland has been moderately successful in pivoting turf-cutting jobs into wind energy jobs. In the States, there’s a massive rebuilding needed throughout the industrial and Appalachian heartlands. It started with workers, politicians, and consumers accepting realities of global warming and technological change — and harnessing them — rather than remaining mired in backward-looking nostalgic fantasies.
